Christmas Day 2010: Visiting Vietnam vets resting at Makawao’s Maui Veterans Cemetery

December 28th, 2010

On Christmas Day, we returned to Makawao’s Maui Veterans Cemetery, this time to pay our respects to Vietnam veterans resting there.

Makawao Maui Veterans Cemetery, flagpole with our poppies, Christmas Day 2010

Once we got home, we went to The Virtual Wall Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall and looked up their names. Then we prepared this video and transcript. We’ve provided each vet’s Memorial Wall full after the video transcript.

This Christmas Day blog is dedicated to the Vietnam veterans resting at Makawao’s Maui Veterans Cemetery and their families.

That’s all that needs saying.

MISSISSAUGAWATCH (Makawao Veterans Cemetery, Maui, Hawaii. Christmas Day, 2010):

Maui Veterans Cemetary and we’re going —and I can tell you the first thing I noticed was that the poppies that we laid —how do you do this? Oh yeah —the poppies that we laid there, on the American flagpole are still there.

Let me show you.

Right there. Still there. That’s neat.

[DIP TO WHITE]

I have to say I feel so terrific that the poppies that we laid here, November the 11th, 2010 are still here. Still look terrific.

[DIP TO WHITE]

It is Christmas Day, 2010 and we’re here at the Makawao Veterans Cemetery. And this is the person I wanted to visit again. Michael J. Pacheco, Hawaii. And let me show you why.

Vietnam vet. And we’ll just move this back a bit. Vietnam. Born November the 14th, 1950. Now I was born October the 4th, 1949. So he was younger than me. And he died September  21st, 1969. So he was 9- less than 19. He was 18 years old when he died.

So we really are looking this time at someone who died in Vietnam.

[DIP TO WHITE]

James G Soriano, Hawaii. Sargeant. Once again, Vietnam. And if you look at the birthdays here. August 19, 1948. October 25th, 1968 died. So that makes him just a little over his 20th birthday. Somebody’s very young son.

[DIP TO WHITE]

Sun is going lower in the sky now.

We now here have Wayne Francis DePonte. California. Here’s something.

October 4th, 1948. And my birthday is October 4th, 1949. And he died August 27th, 1972.

[DIP TO WHITE]

We also have Casimiro Villon. And if you look at the —here, born March 4th, 1947 and died January 18th, 1968. Just shy of his 21st birthday. Twenty years old.

[DIP TO WHITE]

Now this one I find rather sad. There’s no fresh flowers. Robert D. Andrade. And it’s 5 Special Forces GP, Vietnam. August 31st, 1937 and died July 17th, 1969. So shy of his 33rd birthday. But I bet he had stories to tell.

[DIP TO WHITE]

Another one no fresh flowers. Melvin M. Yamashita. Hawaii. Vietnam. And it’s September 16th, 1946 he was born. Died October 24th, 1969. So just after his 23rd birthday.

[DIP TO WHITE]

It is Christmas Day, 2010. The sun is sitting lower in the sky. We’re here at Makawao Veterans Cemetery. Over in this area we have the World War II and especially Vietnam vets.

And what’s wonderful to see is you get people coming and bringing poinsettias and flowers for their loved ones.

So. Let’s —we’re going to work out way down this row. Turning camera off.

[DIP TO WHITE]

Catalino Beltran Antonio Jr. Sargeant. US Air Force. Vietnam. And born December 21st, 1950. Died August 18th, 1972. So 21 years old.

[DIP TO WHITE]

Christmas Day, 2010. We’re here at Makawao, Maui’s Veterans Cemetery. And I want to document this one right here.

This is David Edwards Wischemann. US Army. Vietnam. But here’s the data. September 8th, 1951. October 31st, 1972. So he was 21 years old.

[DIP TO WHITE]

Christmas Day, 2010. We’re here at the Makawao Maui Veterans Cemetery. And it’s getting to be sunset and that’s what I want to document right now. Have beautiful displays here for Christmas —families even leaving veterans their favourite drink. By the way sometime— back there it was Coca Cola.

[DIP TO WHITE]

Christmas Day, 2010. We’re here at the Makawao Veterans Cemetery. And I just want to document this one as well. And the name is Mariano Ribillia Jr. Hawaii. A Vietnam veteran. Born February 24th, 1949 —I was born October 4th, 1949. And died January 21st, 1969. So he died just short of his 20th birthday. And making him nineteen.

[DIP TO WHITE]

Sunset. And I just want to record again that we’re here at the World War I portion. And our poppies are still there from when we planted them on November the 11th, Remembrance Day. There’s another one. And another. This one even has a poinsettia beside it which is neat.

Anyway, time to go. And now, we’re the only ones left. This is it.

Turning camera off.

Mississauga 2010 Election data: HAZEL MCCALLION support and Voter Turnout Sorted by Ward, Polling Station Within Ward

December 18th, 2010

UPDATE December 19, 2010: We’ve been alerted to a small oversight in our table. In his comment below DeValera wrote. “Nice bit of fact digging. Thank you. You missed one bit of red. 2 0021 Lorne Park SecSchool 2688 795 29.58 786 529 67.30”. With appreciation to DeValera, the “67.30” for Lorne Park SecSchool polling station is now red.

Today’s entry is a follow-up to our December 13th, 2010 blog, “Mississauga 2010 Election data: Voter Turnout sorted by Polling Station with Wards sorted by Total Turnout” where we cut past the City’s reported voter turnout average of 34.34% and examined the voter turnout for all 11 wards. We then cut through the average voter turnout in each ward and examined voter turnout for all polling stations. We learned a great deal from this exercise.

This data presented today goes one step further. It takes the table presented in our last blog sorted by voter turnout and simply includes the support for Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion.

As regular readers know, we’ve taken the City of Mississauga’s PDF file of the official election results and converted them into a spreadsheet.

The table we offer today is, at least to me, the most important data out of this 2010 Mississauga municipal election—a window into voter turnout.

A reminder that  Ward 10 had the highest voter turnout with 38.46% and Ward 7 the lowest with 28.20% (see column Pct. Turnout). I’ve also highlighted any figures of less than 70% support for McCallion in red. A cursory scan will show considerable red in Ward 5 at several polling stations. We suggest however that rather than this being reflective of lack of support for the Mayor as such, these are artifacts of an ethnic vote supporting their “own”.  Please see the Mayoral results in the City of Mississauga’s PDF file for more details.

Once again for context, Hazel McCallion enjoyed 76.40% support City-wide and received a total of 107,643 ballots cast.

Last to repeat, these data are preliminary and as always, should anyone spot an error we’d appreciate being advised. Many thanks!

ONTARIO MUNICIPALITIES: A MAJOR (unexplored) ROOT OF YOUTH VIOLENCE

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES

BACKGROUND (repeated from other blog entries)

On November 17th we reported the most preliminary of preliminary findings in the Blog, “Mississauga News quotes Councillors: VOTERS’ LIST WAS A “MESS”. Why didn’t the City check its own Official Election Results?!” That Blog provided insight into how Hazel McCallion’s 107,643 votes were distributed both by ward and polling stations. These data however don’t necessarily show support for McCallion because it was possible for her to receive the highest number of votes in a polling station where she only got 40-50% of Mayor’s ballots cast—a plurality, in other words.

Our November 18th Blog, “Spreadsheet into percentage of Hazel McCallion’s votes by Mississauga polling stations provides unique insights presented McCallion’s support by polling station based on the simple equation “Votes for Hazel McCallion” divided by “Total Ballots Cast for Mayor”. Example. There are 10 ballets cast for Mayor. 8 were for Hazel McCallion. 8/10 or 80% support at that polling station.

Our November 19th Blog, “Mississauga Ward 5 percentages showing support for incumbents Mayor Hazel McCallion and Councillor Eve Adams by polling stations” focused only on Ward 5 polling station results showing the percentage support for both incumbents Mayor Hazel McCallion and Councillor Eve Adams. We decided to report on Ward 5 first because Malton Community Centre is one of our primary Roots of Youth Violence research sites.

Our November 21st, 2010 Blog, “What effect the “robocall”? Mississauga Ward 6 percentages showing support for Mayor Hazel McCallion, Carolyn Parrish and Ron Starr by polling stations” provided a Carolyn Parrish/Ron Starr breakdown. For context we also did the breakdown for Advanced Polls versus Voting Day to see if Hazel McCallion’s robocall had any effect.

As a result of the news that Mississauga Council had ordered a recount of Ward 1, we decided to post our spreadsheet for that ward next. In the November 24 blog, “Mississauga Councillor Calls for Ward 1 Recount –and STATS for Ward 1 Advanced Polls versus Voting Day”, we confirmed that bottomline, Councillor Corbasson was ahead in the Advanced Polls occurring Ocober 14-15th and lost support on Voting Day. We’re convinced that Jim Tovey’s flyer circulated Saturday, two days before Voting Day had the effect intended.

WHAT WE’VE LEARNED

We realize now that our November 18th Blog, “Spreadsheet into percentage of Hazel McCallion’s votes by Mississauga polling stations provides unique insights did not provide a complete picture. For one thing, we presented no totals. Another, back then we didn’t understand the importance of comparing the results of Advanced Polls vs Voting Day to gauge what effect the Shipp-McCallion team’s “over-sized cheque” flyers might have had.

For context, we provide the actual voter turnout by Ward sorted by highest to lowest. Please see column “Turnout“. Note City-wide voter turnout was 34.34% (* checked against City’s results at www.mississauga.ca).

And to repeat, as always, should anyone spot an error we’d appreciate being advised. Many thanks!

Mississauga 2010 Election data: Voter Turnout sorted by Polling Station with Wards sorted by Total Turnout

December 13th, 2010

As regular readers know, we’ve taken the City of Mississauga’s PDF file of the official election results and converted them into a spreadsheet.

The table we offer today is at least to me, the most important data out of this 2010 Mississauga municipal election —a window into voter turnout.

The City of Mississauga website confirms a City-wide average total voter turnout of 34.34%. In our December 8th, 2010 blog, “Mississauga 2010 Election results. Hazel McCallion: Percentage support sorted by ward and voter turnout sorted by Ward” we provided the actual voter turnout by ward. Ward 10 had the highest voter turnout with 38.46% and Ward 7 the lowest with 28.20%

Here’s that table again for context.

Voter turnout sorted by Ward Total percentage

Ward Registered Ballots Turnout Ballots Turnout
Voters Cast for Mayor for Mayor

 10 35503 13656 38.46 13443 37.86
  1 29549 10774 36.46 10584 35.82
  3 37144 13431 36.16 13047 35.13
  6 46022 16554 35.97 16258 35.33
  5 43215 14943 34.58 14484 33.52
  4 38348 13213 34.46 12939 33.74
CITY 417919 143501 34.34 140902 33.72
  8 44830 15391 34.33 15201 33.91
 11 33500 11242 33.56 11059 33.01
  2 32387 10791 33.32 10703 33.05
  9 35501 11684 32.91 11570 32.59
  7 41920 11822 28.20 11614 27.71

This voter turnout table of course, isn’t enough. Just like the City’s 34.34% voter turnout average  is simply the result of Total Ballots Cast divided by Registered Voters, the same is true at the ward level. We’re still just left with averages.

What can be seen and perhaps learned if we also sorted voter turnout in each ward by polling station? That’s what we present here —sorted all 11 wards beginning with Ward 10 which had the highest voter turnout down to Ward 7 with the lowest.

And these data immediately raise questions.

Like Ward 1, Westacres Public School with 40.65% well above the City-wide average versus Ward 1’s  Riverside Public School  with a mere 27.14% voter turnout. Or Ward 3’s  Or Ward 3’s Silverthorn Public School with 40.97% compared to Burnhamthorpe C.C. with 28.34%.

And certainly my special interest because I’m researching the Roots of Youth Violence is Ward 7 with the lowest average voter turnout of 28.20%.

We find that Ward 7 shows Clifton Public School polling station reporting 38.10% voter turnout and a troubling 18.66% at Fairview Public School. And in the same ward, Mary Fix Catholic School with 30.12% voter turnout versus St.Timothy Separate School with 16.95%, even lower than Fairview Public School!

What’s this mean? What’s this voter turnout Small Picture telling us? I can tell you this. No one’s looked at Mississauga elections’ “Small Picture” before.

And as always, should anyone spot an error we’d appreciate being advised.

Anonymous letter surfaces in Vaughan. Is Vaughan “Friend” Mississauga “Fred” or a new “Copy-Cat”?

December 10th, 2010

I’d intended for today’s Blog to provide more Mississauga 2010 election data —this time tables of all 11 Mississauga wards sorted by voter turnout.

Fate intervened. There’s another anonymous “Fred”-like letter —a Vaughan “Friend”. Please see our blog, “Police investigate anonymous “Fred letter alleging Mississauga vote fraud. Here’s the letter. Here are the data!” for the original “Fred” who we will now refer to as “Mississauga Fred”.

When you read Vaughan Friend (who actually signed his letter “A friend, inside at the City of Vaughan.”) and Mississauga Fred’s letters below, you’ll find the similarities striking. Both allege massive voting fraud occurred when election night systems went offline. Both call for manual recounts.

As with Mississauga Fred I took the time to type out Vaughan Friend so that the text of his/her letter can be Googled.

Note, Vaughan Friend’s letter has been checked for accuracy –meaning it’s precisely as it was written. We encourage you to compare the text to the “printscreen” scan. If readers do find errors, as always we’d appreciate knowing

Whether “Vaughan Friend” is also “Mississauga Fred” or a new “Copy-Cat”, perhaps time will tell.

Dear residents of Vaughan,

Some things just do not change at the City of Vaughan. I work in the I T department at the City
of Vaughan. I have witnessed email exchange and private phone messages on how the election
night votes where to be favoured. I also witnessed the City’s computer system tabulating ballots
going offline and being rigged a breach, upon the upload of the advanced polls (check ballots). I
have also witnessed a surplus of tabulation cards that where to be pre loaded with the winners on
them. I also had a staff member questioning me if they should do as their told or lose their job in
regards to manipulation of the vote. The city of Vaughan’s computer systems are very unsecure,
as mentioned in the several reports. The reports were sparked because of the Jackson email theft
that arrived to Di Biase’s door step and others PC in the city and because of the Donofrio
litigation. Donofrio was accused of breaching the cities computer system. I witnessed a staff
member creating reports to make it look like Donofrio breached to terminate him (check the
back-up) this is similar to the on-goings that lead up to the final election results. Some things just
don’t change at the city above the law and this frustrates me as a long time employee. The IT
department was interviewed by a Deloitte & Touche, legend and Bell. The guarded unedited
original Deloitte & Touche report was turned over to Donofrio through the courts. The report
will clearly show the flaws in the cities server system and manipulation and who did what,
perhaps the same person still works in IT, it’s clear how the changes easily took place, as it did
on election night. I want to make note the current council did not receive nearly as many votes as
the official result indicated. Deals were made behind the scenes Vaughan style similar to the Di
Biase recount let’s not forget staff got fired for that one. The incumbents, who lost, should
demand a hand recount and full disclosure of all the election process and an audit of the IT
department and tabulation machines and the clerk’s office. The numbers were skewed if an
investigation takes place though another police force, other than YRP and OPP I will come forth
the residents of Vaughan deserve better, and so do the incumbents that lost unfairly. This is no
way to win an election. I thought the new leader will not stand for corruption maybe I guess
wrong. The City of Vaughan needs to do the right thing and show the real results to the public if
you have nothing to hide or I will post them.

LETTER FROM MISSISSAUGA FRED (Reproduced verbatim)

WHAT I AM ABOUT TO TELL YOU IS VERY DISTURBING.

I WAS INVOLVED IN FIXING THE VOTES AND THAT IS THE REASON THE
COMPUTER WAS OFFLINE MONDAY ELECTION NIGHT FOR SOME TIME, IT
ALMOST DID NOT HAPPEN.

THE ELECTION VOTE COUNT HAS BEEN TAMPERED WITH

THE MAYORS TOTAL WAS NO WHERE NEAR THE AMOUNT THAT WAS
DISCLOSED. Her votes were almost half of what she received. We were told to take
votes away from the others to make it look like the mayor got a majority vote.

The results for the councilors were fixed.
The 2 new councilors did not win and 2 old councilors did loose and we were told to
make them all a winner.

The 2 that actually lost we were told to make it look like they won with a landslide
like the mayors votes. The 2 that won did not actually win we were told to make them
a winner 1 with a small margin and the other by a bigger margin. So now you have
4 councillors who are not supposed to be in office and the 4 that won are out of a job
due to election tampering we made them loose.

ALL OTHER COUNCILLORS VOTES WERE ALSO TAMPERED WITH AND
CHANGED. Take a look at the results we had to adjust almost all the numbers to
make them look as if they balanced. We missed some due to the time we had the
system down and ran out of time and made some mistakes and forgot to adjust the
dropouts who received higher vote counts than someone who ran a full campaign.

A TOTAL MANUAL RECOUNT IS NECISARY.

I WISH I CAN TELL YOU MORE AND I CAN NOT.

YOU SHOULD ACT BEFORE THEY DO A COMPLETE COVER UP. GET
EVERYONE TOGETHER TO PROTEST THE BIGGEST SCANDLE OF THE
CENTURY. THIS LETTER IS NOT SENT OUT TO EVERYONE, SO PLEASE
NOTIFY ALL THE OTHERS ONCE YOU RECEIVE THIS LETTER.

I DO NOT KNOW WHO ELSE TO SEND THIS TO OR WHO CONTROLS OR
OVERLOOKS A SITUATION LIKE THIS WITH ELECTION RESULTS.

GOOD LUCK.

I WILL SAY MY NAME IS FRED FOR NOW.

Hmmm… how to end this blog…. Ah!

Mississauga 2010 Election results. Hazel McCallion: Percentage support sorted by ward and voter turnout sorted by Ward.

December 8th, 2010

As regular readers know, we’ve taken the City of Mississauga’s PDF file of the official election results and converted them into a spreadsheet. It’s time to revisit Hazel McCallion’s voting stats. So.

BACKGROUND

And as always, should anyone spot an error we’d appreciate being advised. Many thanks!

We can now confidently sort McCallion’s support by Ward.  Hazel McCallion won city-wide overall with 76.40% .

Support for Mayor Hazel McCallion sorted by Ward Total percentage

Ward   9:    81.23%     (voter turnout 32.91%)

Ward   1:   72.69%    (voter turnout 36.46%)
Ward   5:   71.28%     (voter turnout 34.58%)

What came as a surprise is the Mayor’s low level of support came from Ward 1 (Tovey/Corbasson) —with only Ward 5 lower at 71.28%.  Another major surprise is the Ward 9 being Shipp-McCallion stronghold!

ONTARIO MUNICIPALITIES: A MAJOR (unexplored) ROOT OF YOUTH VIOLENCE

Police investigate anonymous “Fred letter alleging Mississauga vote fraud. Here’s the letter. Here are the data!”

December 6th, 2010

This is a quick Blog in response to the article, “Letter alleges vote fraud” that appeared today in the Mississauga News. The article “Letter alleges vote fraud” states:

Peel Regional Police are investigating an anonymous letter sent to several candidates after the Oct. 25 municipal election that alleges that the results were “tampered with.”
Cst. Thomas Ruttan confirmed this morning that Peel Police are in the very preliminary stages of a probe after receiving the letter. It was provided to police by several losing candidates who received identical letters alleging that the results were “fixed.”

We received a copy of this letter electronically as a pdf file and we present it here as a “printscreen” of that pdf file.

ANONYMOUS LETTER FROM "FRED" ALLEGING ELECTION/VOTE FRAUD IN MISSISSAUGA 2010 MUNICIPAL ELECTION.Click here for a larger (1000 x 1337) size

UPDATE: DECEMBER 7, 2010. 1:33 PM.  We’ve typed out the anonymous letter from “Fred” so that the text can be Googled. So. Note, the letter has been checked for accuracy –meaning it’s precisely as it was written. We encourage you to compare to the scan above.

LETTER FROM “FRED” (Reproduced verbatim)

One statement that “Fred” makes stands out. S/he states that Mayor McCallion’s votes “were almost half of what she received”.  Half of 76 per cent of McCallion’s vote is 38%. “almost half” means less than 38%! “Fred” writing that the Mississauga Mayor managed less than 38% alone puts his/her letter as Beyond Incredulity. S/he goes on to write, “We were told to take away votes from the others to make it look like the mayor got a majority vote.”

“Fred” also alleges that “The results for the councilors were fixed. The 2 new councilors did not win and 2 old councilors did loose [sic] and we were told to make them all a winner.” For this reason, we’ve presented the results by polling station for both Ward 1 (Jim Tovey/Carmen Corbasson) and Ward 6 (Ron Starr/Carolyn Parrish) sorted by percentage support by winning councillor all in one blog entry.

Next, the anonymous letter ends with “I WILL SAY MY NAME IS FRED FOR NOW.”

“FOR NOW” suggests that Fred will write again. Doubtful now that Peel Police have been notified…

Here are the data.

Note, we’re going to post this Blog now and remind people again that these data are preliminary and and should readers find an error, we’d be most appreciative that you please let us know.

It will be interesting to see how closely the Ward 1 recount matches the original Ward 1 data as recorded in the City’s original Official Results pdf file. We’re betting it’ll match very closely. And that Jim Tovey was the victor in one heck of a squeaker!

Subject: Regarding the anomymous vote fraud letter. Please include this information in Wednesday’s General Committee meeting.

[Please include this email and a printout of the attachment ” Police investigate anonymous letter alleging Mississauga vote fraud_GENCOM_DEC6.docx” for Wednesday’s General Committee meeting. As for the spreadsheet it’s far too huge for hardcopy.]

(Hi Madam Mayor)

Ms. Greer,

I put up a blog that I hope will be of some help to Council on Wednesday when discussing that anonymous letter by “Fred” alleging vote fraud.

Please see “Police investigate anonymous letter alleging Mississauga vote fraud. Here’s the letter. Here are the data!” at:

www.mississaugawatch.ca/blog/?p=10724

Please check the blog versus the attachment as a windows document. I ask that you print out whichever is better.

I am also sharing our 2010 City-wide Election Results spreadsheet gleaned from the City’s official results pdf file. We created it in an attempt to identify the voices of the voiceless (ie: low incumbent support in senior/nursing homes as well as examining vulnerable communities in Mississauga’s “pockets of poverty” as part of my research into the Roots of Youth Violence).

As I say in all our blogs, these data are preliminary and have not been checked for accuracy (ie: correct transfer from the City’s pdf file into our spreadsheet). But I guarantee that any errors are honest ones!

We’d appreciate being advised if you identify any mistakes that we might have made. Also, if for any reason our Peel Regional Police want that spreadsheet, we’d be honoured if you provide it to them.

Thanks,

Ursula

Mississauga Ward 1 Jim Tovey’s “over-sized cheque” flyer’s 129 Vote IMPACT: Advanced Polls vs Voting Day stats.

December 5th, 2010

In our November 24, 2010 Blog,  “Mississauga Councillor Calls for Ward 1 Recount –and STATS for Ward 1 Advanced Polls versus Voting Day”, we provided a breakdown of the Ward 1 voting results by polling station. A reminder that Ward 1 challenger Jim Tovey won that election with just 129 votes more than Incumbent Councillor Carmen Corbasson.

We also reported that “Bottomline, Councillor Corbasson was ahead in the Advanced Polls and lost support on Voting Day” and also introduced a deceptive flyer distributed to all Ward 1 residents by Jim Tovey and his supporters.

Advanced Poll Day 1 and Advanced Poll Day 2 occurred on Thursday, October 14 and Friday, October 15 respectively. These two Advanced Polls were Citywide, included all wards and were held at theMississauga Civic Centre – The Great Hall.

According to the Mississauga News voters wishing to cast ballots on Advanced Polling Day 3 (October 16th) and Day 4 (October 17th) would do so in their own wards (Port Credit Secondary School and Mississauga Senior Centre).

We’d mentioned that on November 25th, a reader emailed a copy of Jim Tovey’s flyer and said that the flyer/card was “dropped off  Sat. before election day.  I understand ward 6  also  got one…” We can confirm that Ward 6 (Ron Starr) and Ward 11 (Luz Del Rosario) also sent out “over-sized cheque” flyers.

JIM TOVEY, DECEPTIVE FLYER, WARD 1, MISSISSAUGA

If the reader’s tip is correct and Jim Tovey’s supporters distributed this “over-sized cheque” flyer the Saturday before Monday October 25th Election day, Tovey’s flyer went out on October 23rd. And that raises an obvious question.

Did Tovey’s “over-sized cheque” flyer have any effect in defeating Incumbent Councillor Carmen Corbasson in this 129-vote squeaker?

While we can never say for certain whether Tovey’s “over-sized cheque” flyer made a difference of 129 votes, it is instructive to examine the total percentage support for both candidates at the Advanced Polls (October 14, 15, 16, and 17) and compare that to the Ward 1 post-flyer October 25th, Voting Day results.

These data below show Carmen Corbasson led by the time the Advanced Polls closed on October 17th with a total support of 50.93% to Jim Tovey’s 47.39% with 1,129 people in Ward 1 casting advanced votes. A reader states that Tovey’s “over-sized cheque” flyer was distributed Saturday, October 23rd. Monday Voting Day shows a drop (-2.74%)  in support for Corbasson in favour of a  2.60% increase in support for Jim Tovey.

Final results, Jim Tovey won 49.71% of the votes and Carmen Corbasson 48.48%. A difference of 129 votes out of a total of 10,554 ballots cast.

As always these data and results are preliminary and should readers find an error, we’d be most appreciative that you please let us know!

So we present these data converted from the City of Mississauga’s Official Election Results PDF file. Sorted by percentage support for Jim Tovey.

VIDEO INTRODUCTION speaking AGAINST a judicial inquiry. “Mega-builder” HAROLD SHIPP:

If I were sitting there among you, Ladies and Gentlemen, who serve on our Council today, I would be wondering what my position would be one year from now when an election is held and how many of you might have a chance for re-election —IF you proceed with the action you are contemplating now.

MISSISSAUGAWATCH whispers into camera:

Now that’s a threat. Isn’t that interesting..

DIP TO BLACK (to signify later in the meeting).

COUNCILLOR NANDO IANNICCA (Acting Mayor):

Councillor Corbasson…

COUNCILLOR CARMEN CORBASSON:

Thank you Mr. Acting Mayor and I will be brief. Um, let me first say that this isn’t an easy time for any of us around this table just like it’s not an easy time for you. I don’t think we take comfort in any of the decisions we’ve had to make of late. But notwithstanding, we are elected to make some tough decisions and I think that’s the type of comment you’re gonna hear around this table today.

I am not at all overwhelmed by the number of people who showed up, Councillor Prentice. In fact, I’m surprised there wasn’t more.

And I’ll tell you why I’m surprised because we all know Madam Mayor is loved, admired and respected. And I for one moment am not going to take away that from her. For me, she has been a role model in many many ways. We both started here in the City in 1978 and I’ve learned an awful lot from her.

I— my biggest difficulty is, and I hope you can understand and appreciate that when we have in-camera sessions, we are privy to certain comments and information that the general public is not.

For me, the in-camera session on the judicial inquiry opened up more questions than it answered.

I— that Madam Mayor didn’t declare one Conflict of Interest for a 17-minute or a 17-second, whatever it was, I have no problem with that.

I do have a problem that official government documents got changed with no satisfactory explanation.

I do have difficulty that any member of Council, doesn’t matter if it’s Madam Mayor, or me, or anyone else, can have off-site meetings, with a landowner, who has an interest in the City of Mississauga, that is going to financially benefit a member of any one of our families.

That may not be against the Conflict of Interest Act. But in my opinion, I would hope, and it’s my understanding that a judicial inquiry can —and most probably would, depending on their findings —make some very strong recommendations to have either the Conflict of Interest Act or the Municipal Act changed.

That’s simply put, Ladies and Gentlemen, for me —I’m not going to speak, I’ll let the others speak for themselves.

This isn’t about Mayor Hazel McCallion. This is about Governance, how do we improve it. Not only for this municipality, but across the Province. And I don’t know what price tag you put on that. Is it ten thousand? Is it one million? Is it ten million? I don’t know.

But I would like to see this City in particular, and certainly Madam Mayor come out with credibility, integrity and that we all maintain our dignity.

I do thank you for coming out today, Ladies and Gentlemen and I will turn it back to the Acting Mayor.

COUNCILLOR NANDO IANNICCA (Acting Mayor):

Thank you…
