The MississaugaWatch Sniff Test

This question is the MISSISSAUGAWATCH Sniff Test for all Ontario municipal Mayors and Councillors:

Do you support asking the Ontario government to extend the investigative authority of the Ontario Ombudsman to include municipalities?

If the answer is not an UNQUALIFIED "Yes!", ask "Why not?" and proceed with extreme caution.

Mississauga Mayoral Candidates stand up for the Ontario Ombudsman (literally) –EXCEPT Hazel McCallion

October 21st, 2010

Yep. Yesterday, during my Mayoral non-campaign speech at the Ward 3/Rockwood Village All Candidates meeting I popped the question to the Mississauga mayoral candidates on stage with me! So here’s the video complete with transcript.

MISSISSAUGAWATCH (October 20, 2010, Saints Martha and Mary Church Rockwood Village (Ward 3, Mississauga):

I’ve been researching City of Mississauga municipal governance through Freedom of Information since January 2007 and I despair for those who need government most.

A 19-year old wrote this to me:

…the system is CORRUPT and this is why there is youth violence this is why there are guns on the street and drugs in the hands of children the youth are fighting with the system because it is CORRUPT there is no way to fix it because the people higher up are sitting nice in their big leather chairs, driving their nice cars, living their perfect life when some people in this world have to work hard to get by and even by doing so they get nothing, and after they realize how hard they have to work to get by they break down and no longer want to live life being part of the system because they realize that living life by the rules of the system gets you no where because it is CORRUPT!

At 19 he recognized something that took me decades to realize.

This municipal government is so corrupt that I call this city MYTHissauga. Oh there’ll be howls from the Corrupt denying the corruption, the cronyism, the chronic abuse of authority, and what the Ontario Ombudsman refers to as “Puffery”–and I call lying.

MYTHissauga, empire of illusion, where a careless reference to Hitler dominates public debate instead of our city’s looming social problems, poverty, homelessness, youth alienation–and the gray tsunami of aging Boomers that is on a collision course with everything else.

Politics is about controlling the Message. About who can lie the most convincingly–and gag the very Truth voters need to make informed decisions! If you doubt that, please: wake up!

On October 26th Hazel McCallion will still be Mayor. And I don’t care if every Mississauga resident votes for her but me. I’m the one who’s got videotape of four years worth of Audit, Budget, Council and public meetings, I’m the one who turned researching MYTHissauga into a science.

Science isn’t about Voting. That’s the beauty of Science: the One can be right against the Many.

It’s time for science: independent, rigorous, evidence-based investigations to shine a cold objective light onto MYTHissauga’s Shameless Symphony of Sycophants.

Announcement: Please don’t vote for me. I won’t even vote for myself. So. Here goes.

I know Hazel McCallion is opposed. But to her mayoral challengers, I ask that you stand up if you are prepared to give me an unqualified “Yes” to this question:

Should the Ontario government extend the investigative authority of the Ontario Ombudsman to include municipalities?

Stand up.

[Applause for candidates who stood up]

Vote for them. That half-dozen votes for me, I don’t care about. I’m going to take my rightful place behind that camera!

Thank you.

[Applause]

ROCKWOOD/WARD 3 MODERATOR (October 20, 2010,Saints Martha and Mary Church Rockwood Village (Ward 3, Mississauga):

Thank you, Ms. Keuper-Bennett. We’d now like to continue with Mayor Hazel McCallion, please.

[Applause]

MISSISSAUGAWATCH (October 20, 2010, Saints Martha and Mary Church Rockwood Village (Ward 3, Mississauga):

That’s a very hard act to follow…

UPDATE: October 21, 2010  12:30 PM.

Mississauga Mayoral candidates, Ghani Ahsan, Donald Barber, Dave Cook, Paul Fromm, Peter Orphanos, Ram Selvarajah , Andrew Seitz and George Winter have all confirmed their unqualified Yes, to the Ontario goverment extending full investigative authority of the Ontario Ombudsman into Municipalities.

Mississauga Mayor, Hazel McCallion remains opposed.

UPDATE October 21, 2010 1:46 pm. The Mississauga News has just published a summary of last night’s candidates’ meeting.

How Joe Chin’s article,Candidates take aim at McCallion’s legacy” could fail to mention that during the mayoral debate all Mayoral candidates EXCEPT Hazel McCallion stood up and gave their unqualified “Yes” to extending the investigative authority of the Ontario Ombudsman to include municipalities is simply beyond me! And a great disservice to Mississauga voters!
